Abstraction in Art

Abstraction means leaving out the details you don't need, shown through examples from art, math, language and the animal kingdom.

Novice · OOP · Updated

At a high level, abstraction is the process of removing all things that are unnecessary while still keeping enough details to accomplish the task at hand.

Abstraction is often used in art to depict something without including many (or even most) of the details. And yet we still know what is being depicted.

A detailed butterfly painting beside a one-line drawing of a butterfly: the drawing leaves out almost every detail, yet we still see a butterfly

Abstraction in Math

In math, we use abstraction to find patterns and to create formulas that help us to solve similar problems over and over. We do this by focusing on the problem or pattern instead of working with specific numbers.

Algebra Equation: Slope-Intercept form of a line

Abstraction in Language

In linguistics, we abstract the rules of a language to understand the grammar, syntax, and meaning without focusing on specific sentences or words. For example, subjects, verbs, and adjectives.
